Does It Look Old? Examine the finish for natural signs of wear. Authentic pieces will have dirt in crevices or in places that are hard to clean, and wear around knobs and on drawers caused by friction. The absence of such wear may indicate that the piece is not old, or that it has been refinished. The latter is not necessarily bad if its been done well, but it will lower the pieces value in most instances. Look inside and underneath the piece for dribbles of stain that indicate a sloppy refinishing job.

Antique Kitchen Wares. Antique kitchen wares, like fruit jars, for instance, can be relatively easy to find and are a good beginning collectible. Often times pieces can be found at flea markets or yard sales, especially in areas of the country with a strong farming or ranching background. In such rural areas items that were grandmother's tools of trade oft en wind up being sold as collectibles.

Is Anything Missing? If the furniture has a veneer, look for broken or missing pieces, or sections that are a different colorevidence the veneer has been poorly patched. If theres a decorative inlay or applied carving, make sure no pieces are missing.

A badly worn or discolored varnish should probably be removed. But, if the finish is shellac, it should be restored or left "as is," never stripped or replaced. If you aren't sure which is on your antique table or desk, find out before you touch it with a stripper.

Inexperienced buyers, armed only with a smattering of book-learning and driven by a hunger for a home furnished with antiques, often payout substantial sums for pieces that take their fancy, but which carry no worth-while guarantee. At least until they have acquired a good working knowledge by dint of studying the things themselves, as well as by reading books. Buyers should ask themselves whether it might not be better to pay a little more - even a little too much - for the right thing, guaranteed by a reputable expert, than to grub around for so-called bargains that turn out to be 'fake'. Generally speaking, a detailed invoice from an established dealer is a much safer form of protection than any description in an auctioneer's catalogue.

The Advantages of Specialising and Only Collecting the Finest Antiques!

By John Cohen

As rather specialised Asian antique collectors, over a very long period, we have managed to help form collections of really fine Japanese netsuke, inro, lacquer boxes, Chinese snuff bottles, pendants, jade and hard stone carvings.

One advantage of collecting in such specialised fields is that most people will not have any idea of what these things are. We believe that on the odd rare occasion when we might have some of these antiques at home, if the average burglar were to break in and find them, the chances are, that it would be the DVD machine, or the TV, that is more likely to be taken.

Another two advantages can be gained, by only buying the finest quality examples that is, providing one can afford to. The first benefit is that these are sure to increase in value, so much more than the average, or poorer pieces and one has far greater pleasure in owning them. It has been apparent over the years of collecting, that owning just one or two superb pieces has always been worth very much more, than having twenty, or more, indifferent ones. But the second advantage is that these, the finest antiques, are also well known amongst the more serious collectors and dealers, as well as by the better auction rooms.

So should a burglar grab any of these treasures and then try to sell them, especially the finer examples, the burglar would not find it so easy. For not only are all these pieces well documented and illustrated, but also serious dealers, collectors and auction houses all belong to (and have an international reporting system) where the word would soon be out. The Internet is so useful for the speed with which such information can be spread. As such unique important pieces are certain to be recognised eventually, the police would then have a valuable lead back to the culprit.

It is true that there are certain top quality antiques that are stolen to order; these then end up in secret collections where the owner dare not ever show them. This is very hard for the owner as one of the pleasures all collectors enjoy is being able to show what they have acquired to fellow collectors. But even if such stolen antiques end up somewhere like this, then although it might take very much longer, there will come a time when they will be discovered. It might not happen till the owner dies, but then what will any heirs do with such collections? If they try to sell any, then the chances of such stolen pieces being recognised still remains very high.

Never use rust-remover on china as it can remove the glaze or protective coating of the china. Also, calcium, lime or rust-remover products should not be used on gold or platinum-banded crystal because these items can stain or permanently change the color of the metal-banding.

Examine the knobs and drawer pulls. Are any missing? Is there a telltale shadow or outline in a different shape, indicating that the hardware has been replaced? Look behind the door and drawer where the hardware is affixed for old drill holes, holes that have been plugged, or modern screws and boltsindications that this may not be the original hardware. Replacements are not necessarily a bad thing, as long as the new hardware is appropriate to the piece and of proportional quality.

Old clocks can be temperamental when moved, so it's best to pick a level place for your clock and leave it there. It may even be necessary to anchor antique grandfather clocks to the wall to maximize their stability. Antique Furniture - A Buyers Guide

By Lindy Vaughan

You can add style to your home with distinctive antique furniture, but what should you think about before you buy that special period antique?

An antique is classified as a piece of furniture that is older than 100 years and has retained an appeal to the buyer. Georgian period items, Regency furniture, Victorian and Edwardian pieces offer their own distinctive style to fit with the surroundings of many modern homes.

Scarcity of antique furniture reflects the values of antiques. A rare antique will be higher in value. Be sure you are buying from a reputable buyer, LAPADA (the Association of Art & Antiques Dealers) antique dealers observe the codes of practice set down by the association so that you can buy antiques with confidence and peace of mind.

The condition of an antique will affect its value. Do not be tempted to buy 'flawless' antiques that have been thoroughly refurbished. The effects of ageing reflects the genuine nature of an antique. Antiques look their best in their original condition (provided they have been well cared for). The originality of antique furniture is what makes an antique retain its value.

You can now find a lot of information about antiques on the internet, for example, searching for Victorian furniture will show a plethora of sites, and will provide an indication of price range (depending on the condition of the antique). But remember, if the antique piece looks perfect, it is unlikely to be genuine (it may be a reproduction), or has had its value reduced by 'over-enthusiastic' refurbishment.

The internet is a useful source of information; however exercise care when buying antiques online. A first hand look at the antique product is not possible on the internet and the website photos may hide possible defects and deficiencies. A reputable antiques dealer will be happy to send you detailed photos to highlight any blemishes with the antique furniture.

Buying from a reputable antique dealer will reassure you that the antique is genuine, a certificate proving its originality (provenance) may also be provided.

When you have purchased your antique, take care to handle and care for it appropriately. Your dealer will be able to offer advice on its care and maintenance. Make sure you avoid over zealous cleaning of your antique, this removes the 'patina' (develops over the aging process) that adds value to your antique.

Do not polish dark antique bronze or you will destroy the old patina and lower the value of the piece.

If, when it finally has to go, an antique shows a decent financial gain, that is a bonus. The real dividend on the original investment is the pleasure it has given. If profit is the main motive, the activity should be acknowledged as speculation, with all the inherent risks that it entails. Speculation is for dealers, investment for collectors and home-Iovers -- but seen in terms of quiet satisfaction rather than cash in the bank.

When negotiating the price of an object at a flea market or garage sale, sometimes it can be effective to take a wad of bills out of your pocket. Thats a sign that youre ready to pay, youre paying in cash and are prepared to close the deal.

One way to be sure antiques is someone's primary business is if they have a store. The investment in rent or a mortgage, employees, utilities and taxes indicates a very high level of commitment to the business and to the area. There are, however, many long-term, reputable dealers who sell only at antique shows and in consignment shops so this is not the only criteria one should use.

Clocks are intricate mechanisms and can be delicate. When you are interested in a piece, try to find out if the clock is in good working order. Some older clocks will only run well if they are absolutely level. If possible, try to have the piece examined by an independent clockmaker. In some instances a clock will retain its value even if the workings have been reconditioned but in other cases the piece becomes virtually worthless without the original mechanism.
